St. Claret College Autonomous, Bengaluru, conducted the 4th Student Conclave India (SCI), bringing together students, industry professionals, and academicians from across the country. The two-day event, organised by DTORR, focused on the emerging trends in tourism, hospitality, aviation, and event management sectors, offering students a platform for learning, networking, and professional growth.
The Student Conclave India 2024 was inaugurated with a grand opening session, featuring a distinguished lineup of guests and dignitaries. Dr. Thomas Thennadiyil, Principal of St. Claret College, warmly welcomed the attendees, setting a tone of inspiration and collaboration for the event. The Guest of Honour, Mr. Mohan R., a celebrated folklore singer, added cultural richness to the session, while Dr. Lateef Kunnibhavi, Officer on Special Duty to the Minister of Tourism, Govt. of Karnataka, shared insights into government initiatives in tourism. Mr. Radhakrishna Holla, Director of the Federation of Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry, as the Chief Guest, highlighted the importance of industry-academia collaboration for the future of tourism. Additionally, Mr. R. Mahadeva, Officer on Special Duty to the Honourable Chief Minister of Karnataka, emphasised the state’s commitment to fostering tourism and hospitality excellence. Their presence underscored the event’s significance in shaping the next generation of industry leaders.
This year’s conclave attracted prominent speakers, including industry leaders such as Ms. Gurleen Kaur (Senior Vice President, iDeck), Mr. Rohit Hangal (Director, Sphere Travel Media), and Ms. Rajani Deb Nair (Commercial Director, Hilton & Hilton Garden Inn). Key sessions covered topics like tourism infrastructure development, destination branding, and the future of MICE and event management, providing deep insights into the evolving landscape of the industry.
With a focus on innovation, skill development, and sustainable tourism, the event also hosted national-level competitions. Students from different institutions participated in challenges like the Startup & Innovation Challenge, Sustainable Tourism Case Study, National Quiz Competition and Best Destination Reel competition, fostering creativity and leadership.
The plenary sessions featured discussions on tackling skill gaps and preparing the next generation of professionals in tourism and hospitality. The event concluded with a valedictory function and awards ceremony, where outstanding contributions were recognized with prestigious awards, including the Dronacharya Award, Young Educator & Researcher Award and Best Campus Friendly Employer and Yuva Tourism Club Award.
The Student Conclave India 2024 proudly recognized the outstanding contributions and achievements in the fields of tourism, hospitality, and aviation. The prestigious Dronacharya Award was presented to Prof. Sutheeshna Babu. S, PhD (JNU), a retired professor and former Nodal Officer at the National Institute of Watersports (Indian Institute of Tourism & Travel Management, Ministry of Tourism, Govt. of India), honouring his lifetime dedication and impact on the industry. Additionally, 14 talented individuals from across India were honoured with the ‘Young Researcher and Educator Award’ for their contributions to advancing education and research in these sectors. The event also celebrated Axplore Travelplus with the ‘Best Campus Friendly Employer Award’ for their unwavering support of the learning community, recognizing their commitment to bridging the gap between academia and industry.
